Men Weigh In On Their Backup Plans
Submitted by Lisa Steadman on April 19, 2010 - 7:08 am

Recently, I blogged about some amazing women and how they implemented their Backup Plans when Plan A no longer suited them. Now, the men weigh in on their Backup Plans…
“After a PhD in physics and 9 years of holding corporate roles in the software industry, when my company had to close the Atlanta office, I decided to fully pursue my passion – photography. Now, over a year later, I own a thriving portrait photography business (lifestyle portraits of babies and families).

“I had been in the military and Corporate America as an engineer for 12 years and it just wasn’t working for me. I was fed up with poor leadership and micromanagement and finally realized that engineering, manufacturing, and Corporate America weren’t my passions. My passions were teaching, speaking, coaching, small business and personal finance/debt free living. So, I left the corporate world to found two companies: one to coach clients through the process of eliminating debt and staying debt free, and one to launch an invention that a friend had created. The results? I’ll never work for someone else again! The coaching business is growing rapidly. I’m helping families change their lives and for the first time have control over their money. It’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. The invention is gaining popularity and has a huge potential as a money maker. We expect to release the website and full production later this year.”
- Matt Wegner
“In my job with Intel Corp., I traveled around the world, doing technical demonstrations on stage with chairman Andy Grove. I was nervous about speaking and decided to take a comedy class to get over my stage fright. The comedy kind of took off, and I left Intel to pursue my dream. Since then, I’ve performed my 100% clean comedy at the Democratic National Convention, three inaugural events, at the United Nations, etc. (Plus, I just shot a commercial for Apple). Essentially, I live the lifestyle of George Clooney in Up in the Air, except instead of bringing people misery by laying them off, I bring people joy and happiness!”
- Dan Nainan
“I left my steady bi-weekly paycheck and concrete job to open up my own consulting business. Business is booming and we’ve had to hire several people. My firm helps federal agencies and major Fortune 500 companies make their technology accessible for people with disabilities. We hire folks with disabilities with IT/Computer Science backgrounds around the country who telework and audit software, hardware, and websites from our clients. It’s been going and growing great and I’m so glad I made that decision.”

More, More, More! (Magazine, that is)
Submitted by Lisa Steadman on September 14, 2009 - 6:16 pm
I happen to love More Magazine. It’s smart, sophisticated, and speaks to women as they effortlessly transform themselves in their fabulous 40s. Love that!
I happen to love More.com especially so these days, as my article Breaking Up, Facebook Style: Top Mistakes People Make Following A Breakup is featured in their Sex & Love section.

See, here’s the thing. Cyberstalking isn’t just for tech-savvy 20somethings. Women of all ages lurk on their ex’s social networking sites following a breakup/divorce. It’s easier than driving by his house to see if he’s home, or asking his friends if he’s over us or still missing us like crazy. That requires too much spotlight. Lurking on our computer @ 3 am in our pajamas? Easy peasy Japanesey.
And oh so damaging to our fragile heartbroken egos.
Like it or not, the internet and especially social media has made getting over someone even more difficult. Now, it’s not just the fear of running into our ex on the street that has us walking on egg shells and never leaving the house without makeup. It’s the sheer terror of lurking on Facebook only to see yourself replaced by a new and improved version of yourself, a.k.a. The New Girlfriend. Or hearing that he’s happy. Or reading flirty comments cute girls you’ve never met are leaving him on Facebook as.if.you.never.existed.
Ugh!
So what’s a grown up girl to do? Walk away. Remove him from your social media sites. Unplug from the 24/7 internet addiction as you heal your heart.
And if you’re not strong enough, ask your Boohoo Crew for help. Like it or not, as grown up as we may be, when it comes to post-breakup behavior online, it’s still high school, complete with the emo surges of tears, melodrama, and unrequited longing.
Step away from the computer until your heart has had time to heal. And even then, make sure your ex it out of your social media picture.

Got Ex Jewelry? Check out Exboyfriendjewelry.com!
Submitted by Lisa Steadman on March 3, 2009 - 8:03 am
If you’ve recently gone through a breakup and have some ex-boyfriend bling to ditch, check out exboyfriendjewelry.com. I love this site! Basically, if you’ve got jewelry from an ex cluttering up your life and don’t want to get ripped off by a pawn shop, this is the place to go. You can buy/sell/trade your jewelry and blog about your breakup (so therapeutic!). They’ve even got a place for you to donate the money you make from your ex-boyfriend jewelry to breast cancer charities. Breaking free from your ex’s memory AND donating to a good cause? Love that!
Mind you, my ex’s were too cheap to give jewelry. But don’t think that’s going to stop me from perusing the site, picking up some sparkly bling, and helping a fellow breakup survivor move on. This is so pay it forward! I love, love, love it.
Here’s that link again: http://www.exboyfriendjewelry.com/
Enjoy!
Making sense of the stuff that’s left behind
Submitted by Lisa Steadman on October 7, 2008 - 8:15 am
When we go through a breakup, it’s usually the stuff we lose that we focus our attention on…
– Our ex
– The surround sound speakers he took with him
– Our dignity
– His t-shirt we used to sleep in
– The life we had together
– All those plans we made for the future
What about the stuff that gets left behind? In truth, that’s the stuff that’s trickier. The constant reminders that he’s no longer with us can haunt us for years! Thankfully, now there’s a blog dedicated to people sharing stories of what was left behind by an ex. StuffThatsLeftBehind.com comes to us courtesy of the creators of exboyfriendjewelry.com, a fantastic site that gives you permission to pawn the bling your ex gave you.
The blog at StuffThatsLeftBehind.com reminds us that we’re not alone. That others have been heartbroken and moved on, even with that pesky stuff that gets left behind. From inheriting cats that refuse to die to a high school Burger King receipt with a menacing love note to regrettable wedding china, the stories are funny, heartbreaking, and refreshingly real.
As for your own stuff that’s left behind? Share your story here.

“Help! My man talks too much!”
Submitted by Lisa Steadman on September 2, 2008 - 8:45 am
Stereotypically, it’s women who talk too much in relationships. Now here’s proof that men do it, too…
Quiet As A Mouse writes: My husband loves to talk; I am more the quiet type. How can I get him to stop talking — without offending him — when I want peace and quiet?
