Living in Los Angeles, I’m sometimes surprised how rarely I encounter an ex (thank God!). The only bad encounter I can recall is during my big breakup when my girlfriend and I went to lunch one day during the week (remember, I worked with Mr. Ex). We were going to try a new restaurant. I opened the door and the first person I saw was Mr. Ex. Seated across from him was a blond woman. He and I made eye contact, he smiled awkwardly, and I turned around and left the restaurant.

Later that day, out one of the windows in my office building I saw them standing very close together in the parking lot, talking and laughing. I knew I shouldn’t let myself just stand there, watching him enjoy the company of another woman, a beautiful woman I’d never seen before but I couldn’t stop myself. My heart raced and I wanted to throw up. But I stayed there and watched them. It was agonizing! My only consolation was that he never knew that I saw them in the parking lot. Ouch!

Recently, I was approached by my friends at Post Haste Media, a small but feisty media company interested in creating a promotional online video campaign for my book It’s a Breakup, Not a Breakdown. We brainstormed all kinds of fun ideas geared towards promoting and selling my book. And while Rick and Tara are consummate pros, nothing quite gelled. None of the ideas really excited us. Then we came up with this idea — a video confessional chronicling the five stages of breakups based on the five stages of grief — denial, anger, bargaining, sadness, acceptance. We held a casting session, met tons of great actresses (and a few actors), and realized we were onto something. Each and every actor we met brought something unique, fresh, special to their audition. We recognized they were tapping into their own breakup history as well as the history of friends. It was an honor to witness.

That’s when we realized we didn’t need a script. We’d just let the actors do their thing. We just set up the camera (properly lit by the extraordinary cinematographer Alec D. Boehm), and sat back while the actors rode the wave of the five stages of breaking up. Real or made up, their stories are raw, exposed, beautiful, and emotional. The results are fantastic, thanks not only to the actors but to Tara’s perceptive direction and editing, as well as Rick’s producing and editing.

In this week of giving thanks, I am incredibly thankful for the career momentum I’ve experienced this year.  In the last six months alone my first book was published, I appeared on the Today Show, got to meet my idol Candace Bushnell, got engaged to Mr. XY (a personal pinnacle), and most recently walked the picket line of a Writers Guild strike.  Holy dreams come true, Batman!

Which brings me to my latest moment of gratitude.  Thanks to the amazing networking group I belong to Ladies Who Launch, I recently got the opportunity to blog about breakups for the one and only Huffington Post.  You heard me — the Huffington Post!  I’m a huge fan of HP founder and all around amazing lady Arianna Huffington so this is a big thrill.

Living in Los Angeles, I try to stay up to date with all things Hollywood.  Being a writer, I’m especially interested in the current Writers Guild strike.  While not a member of the guild, I nonetheless support their efforts to get fairly compensated for their work, most especially the matter of residuals on the use and reuse of new media.  And in an effort to show my solidarity, I decided to bake the strikers some of my world-famous cookies and deliver them directly to the picket lines.  Mr. XY and I spent Sunday evening baking and then today, I dropped them by Warner Brothers Studios.  

I picked Warner Bros. for two reasons.  1.  I happen to love Warner Bros-produced programming and 2. The studio’s near my house.    In the past few weeks, I’ve seen pretty large crowds picketing in front of the major studios.  However, today’s crowd was relatively light — a handful of enthusiastic men and women waving picket signs at oncoming traffic.  I was a little nervous about crashing the picket line, but figured it would be okay once I introduced myself. 

It was more than okay!  After introducing myself and passing around my cookies, I was invited to pick up a sign and join the demonstration.  I figured Why not? After all, it’s easy to say you support a cause, but it’s not so easy to give your time or to publicly stand up for the cause.  And so I picked up a picket sign and started waving it at oncoming cars.  The majority of people honked and waved in support. I probably spent an hour on that corner, chatting with the other picketers (some writers, some show crew members, some Teamsters) and waving my sign proudly.  It felt really good to stand up for something I believe in, rather than just complain about a problem (like I usually do) without trying to be part of a solution. 

Passing out cookies to picketers is one thing. Now I’m ready to get involved for real. There’s a Labor Solidarity rally in Hollywood tomorrow at 1 p.m. Mr. XY and I are planning on participating.  If you’re in the area and would like to get involved, click here.
