Breakup Tip of the Week: Keep your breakup to yourself (sort of)
![]()
Not to get all political, but the public breakup of Barack Obama and Reverend Wright got me thinking about the do’s and don’ts of breaking up. Specifically, the importance of breaking up with dignity and whenever possible, privately. Breakups are hard, this much is true. But they’re much more difficult when one or both parties tries to corral friends, family, and Joe Public into the mix.
Asking mutual friends to take sides is a big no-no. Instead, recruit your Boo-Hoo Crew for 24/7 support and leave the breakup details a mystery to the rest of the world. It’s none of their business. DO NOT issue ultimatums as in, If you don’t side with me, we’re no longer friends! Talk about tacky!
When people ask about the breakup, keep your answers brief. Don’t engage in a long tirade of your ex. It only makes you look bad. Plus, word travels fast and you really don’t have the time or energy for a retaliation from your ex.
To be a true breakup rock star, practice self care, kindness, and don’t blast the breakup to the world.
Good luck and happy healing!
